4.4.5   The Potential for Ethnic Conflict

(This is an archived page, from the Patterns of Power Edition 3 book.  Current versions are at book contents).

Previous sections have identified ways in which people from different cultures can live together peacefully, but in practice there are many examples of discord.  The following sub-sections identify different causes of conflict:

People have a natural tendency to form groups which often exclude people from other groups, engendering mutual suspicion and sometimes outright hostility (4.4.5.1).

• This potential for hostility can be consciously exploited by people seeking power (4.4.5.2).

• Immigrants may look different and might have unfamiliar customs.  Some people resent the resulting change in the character of their neighbourhood (4.4.5.3).
