Previous sections have identified ways in which people from different cultures can live together peacefully, but in practice there are many examples of discord. The following sub-sections identify different causes of conflict:
• People have a natural tendency to form groups which often exclude people from other groups, engendering mutual suspicion and sometimes outright hostility (4.4.5.1).
• This potential for hostility can be consciously exploited by people seeking power (4.4.5.2).
• Immigrants may look different and might have unfamiliar customs. Some people resent the resulting change in the character of their neighbourhood (4.4.5.3).
